SPRINT HOME > U16 SPRINT TRAINING
Sprint training for U16 paddlers consists of traning sessions held one to two times per day. Spring and fall training runs approximately 7-9 sessions per week. Summer training sees the frequency rise, going up to 10 sessions per week at times depending on the training situation. Most training takes place on the water but there is some dry land training as well, particularly in the spring and fall.
In the winter, strength and padldimg machine (erg) sessions are held at the RCC gym. Swimming and pool paddling sessions are held at Carleton University pool. Running & skiing sessions are held at Mooney's Bay. The cost of these facility rentals is included in the program fee, but athletes are responsible for their own equipment. If you choose not to purchase skiis, a running program will be provided.
Most racing happens during summer regattas however there are some racing opportunities in the spring and fall as well.
A racing jersey is required for all EOD, CKO Sprint and CKC sanctioned events. These are available for sale at the office.
All paddling equipment is supplied by The Rideau Canoe Club. Although the club has a large selection of boats and paddles, these may not be of the competitive level or quality the individual may desire. The club's equipment is shared and available on either a first-come, first-serve basis, or as assigned by a coach. Athletes using club equipment must be prepared for the likelihood that they will be using different boats and paddles on a daily basis. It is not possible for athletes to claim or reserve specific boats or paddles for their sessions. For these reasons, most competitive paddlers at this age level purchase their own paddle and boat (single - K1 or C1). Athletes wishing to purchase a paddle or boat of their own should consult with their coach to determine the best options to match their needs.
Club membership is required to participate in Sprint Paddling Programs. Membership covers the full calendar year. There are individual and family memberships available. LEARN MORE about membership.
All paddlers must be competent swimmers (swim test required or waiver?)
