Yes! With the number of paddlers we have in each age group now a WAR CANOE is what we need.
You can help raise the funds to get the WAR CANOE taking advantage of the FUNDSCRIP program.
With FUNDSCRIP you can get “gift cards” for almost anything you buy every day. FUNDSCRIP will give back a percentage of the amount of which half will go to the WAR CANOE fund and half to you!
For instance (Amount at Percentage is Money Back):
  • you are a book lover and buy books to read during the regattas at Chapters ($25 at 7% is $1.75)
  • you have a dog, or a cat, or a fish, and buy your pet stuff at PetSmart ($25 at 4% is $1.00)
  • you are redecorating your house or getting extra stuff for the summer at Pier 1 Imports ($50 at 7% is $3.50)
  • you are having a baby shower and want to give a nice present from Roots Kids ($50 at 7% is $3.50)
  • you have your home office and buy stuff at Staples ($50 at 3% is $1.50)
  • your family goes to the movies once or twice a month to Cineplex Theaters ($100 at 4% is $4.00)
  • you fill up your car’s gas tank twice a month ($125 at 2% is $2.50)
  • you do your groceries at Loblaws, Your Independent Grocer, food BASIC$, or Metro ($300 at 3% is $9.00)
  • you are planning to do some renovations this summer buying at Home Depot ($500 at 3% is $15.00)
  • you have a latté every now and then at Starbuck’s ($25 at 5% is $1.25)
  • you get your training gear at the Running Room ($100 at 6% is $6.00)
  • you are planning a fancy vacation at a Fairmont Hotel ($250 at 10% is $25)
The total Money Back would be $74.00$37.00 towards theWAR CANOE and $37.00 back to YOU!

With warmer temperatures coming the RCC is getting ready for COLD WATER training.  When the Cold Water Policy is in effect, Paddlers will only paddle as a group during scheduled coached training sessions.  MOTORBOATS with 2 people (1 coach + 1 safety with boat license) must be on the water with the group at all times.  Paddlers can NOT paddle from the RCC alone while the Cold Water Policy is in effect.

The Club has Cold Water Training Procedures that must be followed:
  •  Life jacket/PFD
    • Mandatory for paddlers under the age of 18 while the water is below 8 degrees Celsius
    • Mandatory for anyone under the age of 15 all the time. With the changing of the age categories at the recent AGM, this year it includes anyone born in 1998 or later.
    • Recommended for everyone while the water is below 8 degrees Celsius. Paddlers over 18 who choose not to wear a PFD must sign a waiver and have an approved PFD accessible in their boat or in the accompanying safety boat
  • There shall be two safety motorboats (with a coach and saftey in each) on the water at all times
  • Paddlers must stay within sight of the safety boat and close to shore at all times
  • Paddlers must stay in pairs and stop paddling if the coach’s whistle is blown
  • In case of capsize, get your torso out of the water as much as possible onto your boat; the person you are paddling with should help keep the capsized boat steady
  • Coaches will consider weather/water conditions and determine whether to cancel an on-water session due to safety concerns.
Regardless of how experienced or skilled you are you MUST follow the procedures.  The dangers of cold water/weather are well known, including hypothermia and shock. This is why athletes, coaches, supervisors and volunteers must be fully prepared and trained for all situations and they must be aware of the risks.  CLICK HERE to learn more about the effects of cold water.

Paddlers: Winter Park 10K Results

posted Mar 27, 2013, 12:37 PM by Meaghan Davis

email from Mike:

For your interest,

Here are the results for the Winter Park 10km race last Saturday.  I have captured these from the web site and just included categories we had paddlers in.

I expect they will have pictures posted soon featuring many of our group here  http://www.trackshack.com/gallery.php

On the web Alex and Maddy were listed with the men so may not yet be corrected on the web.  I have asked them to change this.  Maddy was 1st in the 14-18 age group and Alex was 6th in the 19-24 age group.

We can heat up this event again next year with a bigger and faster team.

RCC Closed During March Break

posted Mar 7, 2013, 1:04 PM by Meaghan Davis

This is a reminder that the RCC has a planned training break the week of March Break. There will be no training from Saturday, March 9 to Sunday, March 17.  Adult programs and Para-Canoe will run as scheduled. We understand many families will be going away during this time while others are off to the FL training camp. For those who are staying in Ottawa, coaches have planned this time as a training break.
