U15 - Atom, Peewee & Bantam

Yes! With the number of paddlers we have in each age group now a WAR CANOE is what we need.
You can help raise the funds to get the WAR CANOE taking advantage of the FUNDSCRIP program.
With FUNDSCRIP you can get “gift cards” for almost anything you buy every day. FUNDSCRIP will give back a percentage of the amount of which half will go to the WAR CANOE fund and half to you!
For instance (Amount at Percentage is Money Back):
  • you are a book lover and buy books to read during the regattas at Chapters ($25 at 7% is $1.75)
  • you have a dog, or a cat, or a fish, and buy your pet stuff at PetSmart ($25 at 4% is $1.00)
  • you are redecorating your house or getting extra stuff for the summer at Pier 1 Imports ($50 at 7% is $3.50)
  • you are having a baby shower and want to give a nice present from Roots Kids ($50 at 7% is $3.50)
  • you have your home office and buy stuff at Staples ($50 at 3% is $1.50)
  • your family goes to the movies once or twice a month to Cineplex Theaters ($100 at 4% is $4.00)
  • you fill up your car’s gas tank twice a month ($125 at 2% is $2.50)
  • you do your groceries at Loblaws, Your Independent Grocer, food BASIC$, or Metro ($300 at 3% is $9.00)

The total Money Back would be $74.00$37.00 towards theWAR CANOE and $37.00 back to YOU!

Bantam Update

Hey Guys! 

Spring is here!!! This an exciting time of year, because it means that all our hard work over the winter is about to pay off when we get to go on the water!!!! It also means there is lots of organizing to take care of before we get to paddle. 

1. Bantams will start getting on the water in May (date TBD). This is weather dependent! 

2. Tomorrow, April 20th, we will be doing an adventure run- Amazing Race style. Athletes- If you have one, please bring a phone or ipod that records video- this will be how we know you made it to every checkpoint! (Details to come at practice) 

3. Next Saturday, April 27th, is the Spring Rideau Canoe Club Clean-up Day! Paddling is a sport that relies heavily on equipment, and we must ensure that it is in good working order and properly taken care of. The more organized, maintained and efficient the equipment is, the less time we have to spend worrying about it before we get on the water every day! The Clean-Up will take place right after practice at 10 am on Saturday, April 27th (you can have a quick break to eat and rehydrate before we get into the cleaning!) Everyone is expected to attend and help out. 

4. On the SAME DAY, Saturday, April 27th, we are going to have a Bring a Friend Day! Invite your school friends, or friends from your other activities (hockey, skiing, running, etc) to come try the Canoe Club for the morning! We all know how awesome the Canoe Club is, and we can never have too many bantams in our program! Your friends are welcome to stay and help at the Clean Up after if they want! (If anyone needs volunteer hours I can sign a form). 

5. The NEXT Saturday, May 4th, we have two events going on. First of all, it is the Spring Open House. This is where parents can come and meet the coaches/ask any questions they might have. It is also an opportunity to register for this year! (See more about registration in point 7). 

6. May 4th is also the EpiPen Take Action EventIt's a 5K run/walk. Their goal is to create awareness of anaphylaxis, allergies and asthma and to bring the allergic community together to raise funds for research and education into allergic disease.

Here are some excellent reasons to participate: 
Our Bantam athletes regularly run 5K or more. It would be great if the athletes could participate in an organized  community run:
1. to give them a variety of running courses;
2. so that the athletes can get be officially timed;
3. to do an event together with families who want to participate;
4. to raise awareness for the Rideau Canoe Club;
5. to raise money for a good cause; and 
6. because it would be fun!

If your child wants to participate, (and I encourage them to do so) it is your responsibility to register them and supervise them while at the event. If you are unable to make it, I am happy to put you in contact with another parent who you may be able to carpool with. Because of the Open House (see above) I am unable to attend the event, so your child would attend this event INSTEAD of practice for May 4th. We will still run a practice at the canoe club for those who cannot make it to the EpiPen Take Action Event. 

Please respond ASAP (April 22 at the latest) if you are planning on entering your child so I can help coordinate drives. 

7. We now have online registration for club membership and program registration!! Most of you have registered either for winter or for early spring. These programs (and your last years club membership) expire at the beginning of May. In order to register for a club membership for this coming year, you must go online to http://www.rideaucanoeclub.ca/home/membership/registration. You must also register for the bantam program (or peewee if your child is a peewee). I believe there is an option to sign up for spring, summer and fall programs all together, or you can do them separately. Lockers must be cleaned out with locks removed by  8 pm on Friday, April 26 for locker cleaning and reassignment for the 2013 Spring season.  Lockers with locks still remaining the morning of Saturday, April 27 will be cut and items placed in the lost & found.  Locker registration for the Spring and/or Winter 2013 is done through membership registration.  CLICK HERE to review the locker & changing room policies.

The Club is hosting it's annual Club Clean-Up on Saturday, April 27 from 10 am to 2 pm.  With all hands on deck from membership and athletes, the Club will sparkling for a new paddling season.  Here are some items that are needed:

Pressure washers to clean the club exterior and windows
Cloth and gentle cleaning products to clean the inside of lockers
dusting cloths & extending dusters for picture frames and trophies
Cloth and glass cleaner for inside window
Power tools to help build a covered announcement board

Early Spring Bantam Program

Hey Guys!!!

Welcome to early spring training with the bantam program! I hope everyone is having a good March Break. If you are getting this email it is because you have expressed interest in the early spring program. If you have not yet paid, please do so at your earliest convenience!

This winter we have elevated the level of bantam program training, and I am sure that you will be a great addition to our group. We currently have practice on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6-8 pm, Saturdays from 8-10 am, and Sunday evenings swimming at Carleton pool from 7-8:30 pm.

Mondays: circuits in the gym, with a focus on bodyweights that work on getting the heart rate up, and on quickness. We also spend a lot of time making sure that there is proper range of motion and technique.

Wednesday: weight training, focusing on building strength, doing balanced exercises and learning the proper ways to do weights

Friday: medicine ball and balance ball work, focus on coordination and full body exercises. We often work in partners and teams, focus on proprioception and agility. This is also our paddling machine night where we do a combination of endurance on the machines, learning technique and creating a working knowledge of the technical norms in paddling so that when we get on the water we are better able to communicate.

Saturday: we try to run outside as much as possible on this day, building endurance and cardio fitness.

Sunday: swimming, cardio and technique work

Coaches are myself and Lana, and Catrin will be helping us on a volunteer basis.

Training starts on Saturday, March 16th, at 8 am!! I look forward to seeing you there!!

Bantam Spring Program

Hey Guys! 

I hope your March Break is going well!! I'm not sure what Wade, Ian and Diana have communicated to you, but if you are getting this email it is because you have been training with the midget group all winter, but are not going to Florida. Some of you are going to be bantams again because of the rule change, while some of you are going to be midgets again. I will be taking over coaching while the other coaches are away, and those of you who are bantams will stay with my group in preparation for the summer!

I am excited for you to join our training group! We have brought training to a new level this winter and I'm sure you will find it both fun and challenging. 

We have practice from 6-8 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8-10 am on Saturdays, and there will continue to be swimming on Sunday evenings from 7-8:30 pm. 

On Mondays we do cardio circuits in the gym, focusing on being speed and endurance. Hopefully with daylight savings making it brighter we will be able to go outside soon!
On Wednesdays we do weights for strength and balanced muscle groups. 
On Fridays we do balance and coordination work, followed by paddling machine. 
Saturdays are cardio/strength again, and Sunday swims are cardio and technique (same as usual). 

The March break is off, but we start up again on Saturday, March 16th. 

Lana and I will be sharing the coaching, and Catrin is going to volunteer so that we can provide more coaching to our greater group size. 

When people get back from Florida, we will re-evaluate the groups to determine when we will get on the water (depends on weather, coaches available, group size, etc).
