10 Rideau Athletes Selected to Represent Canada this Summer

Events include Senior World Championships, Junior World Championships, Pan Am Games and Olympic Hopes Regatta

Ottawa, June 28 – Canoe Kayak Canada has released its’ list of Canoe and Kayak athletes nominated to represent Canada at 3 major international events this summer.  The events include the Junior World Championships in Romania, the Olympic Hopes Regatta in Slovakia, and the Pan Games in Peru.

We are proud to announce that 10 Rideau athletes have been selected to paddle for Canada this summer.

At the Junior Level, the Rideau Canoe Club leads all national canoe clubs with 6 paddlers representing Canada. Canoer Ella Hodgson-Pageau, along with Kayakers Maren Bradley and Toshka Besharah, will be paddling for Canada at the Junior World Championships in Pitesti, Romania.  The Regatta will take place from August 1 to 4.   This is the second year Bradley has been selected to paddle for Canada at the Junior Worlds.

In early September, Hodgson-Pageau and Besharah will again return to Europe, and will be joined in wearing the Maple Leaf by Canoers Matthew O’Neill and Kieran Graham, as well as Kayaker Jacob Price, at the Olympic Hopes Regatta in Bratislava, Slovakia.  The Olympic Hopes Regatta hosts many of the world’s top u17 and u16 athletes. This will be the second Olympic Hopes Regatta for both Besharah and Hodgson-Pageau, and Hodgson-Pageau will be looking to build on her Gold and Silver medal performances at the 2018 event.

“We are incredibly proud of our Rideau team” said Rideau Commodore Tom Hoferek.   “To lead all Canadian clubs in sending athletes to these major races this summer speaks to the dedication of both our athletes and our coaches, and to the youth programs we are operating at the Club.”    Hoferek noted that all 6 Rideau athletes have come up through the various youth and junior paddling programs the Club operates in the summer, and throughout the year.

At the senior level, Drew Hodges and Rowan Hardy-Kavanagh will both represent Canada in Canoeing at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru.  The event will take place in Lima, Peru from July 26 – August 11.  Both Hodges and Hardy-Kavanagh have competed for Canada on the World Cup circuit in previous years, and join National Team Kayakers Madeline Schmidt and Natalie Davison who were selected to the Senior Worlds Championships Team earlier this year after National Team Trials 1 in May. The ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships will be in Szeged, Hungary, 21 - 25 August 2019.

“We can’t wait to cheer on our Rideau athletes this summer as they paddle for Canada!” said Hoferek.
