Regatta Ready Camp 3: July 16-28

Regatta Ready is a full day two week pre-competitive program for young paddlers (11 – 14 years old) who are looking for a challenge, but who aren't ready yet or unsure if they want to commit to the competitive bantam sprint racing program.

Regatta Ready participants will spend their time at the Canoe Club developing their paddling and teamwork skills and will be able to put these new skills to the test by participating in the Carleton Place Canoe Club regatta held Saturday July 28thth in Carleton Place Ontario.  (More information regarding the regatta will be given upon registration for this camp).

Participants will learn the fundamentals of canoeing and kayaking, developing and performing their skills in a safe and structured environment at their own pace while paddling with other paddlers who are training in the concurrently running bantam program.

Our Regatta Ready Program reinforces important personal skills such as teamwork, self-confidence, communication & leadership, and teaches the importance of healthy and active lifestyles. To reinforce safe paddling skills, all participants are required to wear life-jackets or PFDs any time they are on the water. All of Rideau’s paddling programs are led by friendly, dependable, knowledgeable and certified coaches.

Pre-requisites: NEW THIS YEAR!

Although no paddling experience is required, Regatta Ready Camps participants must demonstrate minimum swim ability.

Prior to getting in boats participants must show they have the ability to swim 50 metres (any stroke), stay afloat in water for 5 minutes. Instructors will assess swimming ability on the 1st day of the program so please come ready to get in the water.  Swim ability is accessed without a lifejacket or other flotation device.  If your child is nervous about this process we welcome you to swim along with your child to ease the nerves.

If you are unsure if your child can complete the swim assessment, come by the RCC on Sunday, May 27 from 10 - 12 pm & Sunday, June 3 from 10 - 12 pm.  If your child is successful during one of these times, they will not have to repeat the process on the first day of camp.  Participants do not need to be registered in order to take advantage of the trial times for the swim assessment.

Equipment:  For more information on a specific Regatta Ready Camp please select the session you are interested in.

The canoe club will provide all paddling equipment.  Although Rideau has PFD’s for paddlers use, participants are welcome to bring their own.  PFD’s must fit ‘properly’ to be acceptable.  Two changes of clothing will be required; clothing should be comfortable, loose fitting and preferably made of quick drying fabric (they do get wet!).  Running shoes are required for dry-land practice activities.  Sun screen, water bottle and snacks are needed for each training session.

Program Fee:  $550

Note: If a paddler who is registered in this Regatta Ready Camp #3 and chooses to sign up for the full competitive bantam summer program we will waive the program fee and only the membership fee for the RCC will be required.
