Regatta Ready is a two-week introduction to competitive Sprint Canoe-Kayak for athletes aged U14 and provides all the basics
needed to continue into the full summer competitive program.

Throughout the camp the paddlers will progress through all the basic skills of sprint paddling.  Paddlers will learn about water safety rules for sprint boats, how to balance, paddle, and train in sprint kayaks and canoes. Each practice they will do a warm up, practice/work out, and cool down.

This program will set paddlers up with all the necessary skills to paddle canoes and kayaks competitively in both singles and crew boats. The goal is to teach good training habits and a love for being outdoors and on the water.

To reinforce safe paddling skills, all participants are required to wear life-jackets or PFDs any time they are on the water. All of Rideau’s paddling programs are led by friendly, dependable, knowledgeable and certified coaches.

The summer sessions of Intro to Paddling - Regatta Ready include the opportunity to race at a fun, local regatta. Participants will learn competition skills and rules for sprint canoe kayak, and will participate in on and off water training sessions.

Pre-requisites:
  • Age Categories: U13 - born in between 2004 and 2007
  • Although no paddling experience is required, Regatta Ready Camps participants must demonstrate minimum swim ability.
Prior to getting in boats participants must show they have the ability to
roll into the water and swim 50 metres (any stroke) and stay afloat (tread water) for 1 minute (as per the National Lifesaving Society Swim to Survive standard). Instructors will assess swimming ability on the 1st day of the program so please come ready to get in the water. Swim ability is assessed without a lifejacket or other flotation device. If your child is nervous about this process we welcome you to swim along with your child to ease the nerves.

If interested, ask us about our swim assessment dates set prior to camp to help determine if your child needs to improve their swimming skills prior to camp starting. If your child takes the swim assessment on one of these dates and passes, they will not have to take it again on the first day of camp...unless they want to! The assessment will take place by the doc at the Rideau Canoe Club in the waters of Mooney's Bay supervised by a certified lifeguard. No registration is necessary for pre-assessment or for the camp prior to the pre-assessment.

Returning Regatta Ready Participants:

Regatta Ready is the introduction into the competitive aspect of Sprint Canoe and Kayak. If you have taken the Regatta Ready program before we highly encourage you to sign up for our full day U15 Sprint program.

For returning Regatta Ready participants will be placed on a list and will be put into the program if there are any spaces available, priority will be to new registrants who have not taken this program previously.

If, however, there is space available and you would like to take this 2 week introduction to competitive canoeing again, we would like to remind you that you will be going through the same program again in terms of a few days of introduction to the sport, club tour, and will be placed in speed and age appropriate groups to train for the two weeks.
