Rideau’s Madeleine Schmidt wins bronze medal at the 2013 ICF U23 and Junior World Championships in Welland, ON

Rideau Canoe Club’s Madeleine Schmidt won the Junior Women K1 200m bronze medal representing Canada last Sunday, August 4, at the 2013 ICF U23 and Junior World Championships in Welland, ON. Maddy’s was the first Canadian medal of the championships after 5 other crews had tried the day before and earlier that morning, including a great 4th place finish in the U23 Men C2 1000m which had been the closest to the podium.

Maddy had to endure the K1 500m heats and semifinals as well as the 200m heats and semifinals over the three previous days in order to earn a place in both finals on Sunday. She came in 6th place in the Junior Women K1 500m final later that afternoon.

After Maddy broke the spell Cheema’s, Michelle Russell won the gold in the U23 Women K1 200m and the bronze medal in the 500m; Jason McCoombs from Banook Canoe Club won the silver in the U23 Men C1 200m; Laurence Vincent-Lapointe of Trois Rivieres Canoe Club won the gold medal in the U23 Women C1 200m; Taylor Potts of Burloak and Maria Halavrezos of Senobe gave Canada another bronze in the U23 Women C2 500m. A great day for the Canadian paddling family gathered at the new Welland International Flatwater Centre with a great total of 6 medals.
