RCC News No. 94 - January 21, 2010

Last Sunday I wrote in the Ottawa Sports Awards note that "We expect one of our members will be honoured this year." Ian Mortimer is the Ottawa Male Athlete of the Year 2009.

I also wrote how the committees and the board have been working the past few months preparing for the new season. Here you'll find more about the Paddling Committee and the plans to be National Champions 2010.

February 27 is quickly approaching. Please reserve your tickets for the Commodores' Dinner.

Paddles Up, take it away!

Ottawa Sports Awards

The 2009 edition of the Ottawa Sports Awards dinner was held yesterday, January 20, 2010 at Algonquin College.

It was a great night for the paddling community in Ottawa

The first think I noticed when I got there was that i | Fathom's logo was everywhere. Leo Tardioli's company was the Presenting Sponsor. Leo and Heather Tardioli are proud parents of Ben --Canada Games 2009 and Junior Men C-1 500m 2009 Canadian Champion--, Dean and Lucas, long time RCC Members.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Kristin Gauthier was named the Canoe / Kayak - Sprint Athlete of the Year for the great season she had in Europe and the six gold medals she got at Nationals.

On behalf of the Club coach Graeme Lind and athlete Jane McBride received a plaque in Recognition of Sport Excellence with the National Champions crews names engraved. I kept the certificates of the athletes that were not present.

LA Schmidt was named Female Coach of the Year for the great job she has done at Ottawa River Canoe Club and the success she had with the Ontario Team at the Canada Games in PEI.

I am happy to inform that the Ottawa Male Athlete of the Year 2009 is Ian Mortimer!

Ian had a great come back from his shoulder injury and was fourth in the C-4, along with the C4C members, at the World Championships last August. He also brought the Juvenile and Junior Women war canoes to a golden finish at Nationals in Sherbrooke.

Commodores' Dinner

Past Commodore Phil Caiger-Watson started the Commodore’s Dinner many years ago.  It’s purpose was primarily as a fund raising event and an opportunity to enjoy the fellowship in the off season.

The Paddling Committee
The paddling committee is responsible for all of the club programming and staffing for those programs. It is a huge task and key to the success of the club. To make sure there is thoughtful and insightful decision making the committee has been selected to be representative of different elements of the membership. So we have an athlete's rep (Rhys Hill) and a Master's rep (Meredith Curren) each elected by their respective groups. Cindy Aldrich-Braddon will be responsible for bringing us the Bantam and younger paddlers needs. In terms of specific coaching expertise we have former national team member and Rideau Head Coach Adrian Richardson, Lyle Cameron who has coached at a high level in cross country skiing and John Bales, former Head Coach at Rideau and current President of the Coaching Association of Canada.  Ann Raymond was on the past paddling committee so adds continuity and Louise Hine, former National Team athlete has offered to be the committee secretary. Last but not least the Commodore also is a voting member of the committee. It is a fairly large group but there is lots to do so there will be plenty of work for all!  Each committee member has specific area that they are responsible for such as coach/athlete education, evaluation and contract management.  We are meeting frequently in this important planning phase.

Head Coach Update

The process for hiring a head coach began at our first meeting. We created a job description which was circulated widely across Canada and internationally and the response was excellent.  We have been very impressed with the quality of the candidates. All of the interviews are completed and our plan is to have the selection and negotiation with the successful candidate completed by the end of January for an official start date at the beginning of April. In February we will be working with the new coach to review our coaching needs for the summer and advertise the positions available. Hiring of most of the staff will be in March. The Head Coach will be building their team of coaches so will be making the key decisions on staffing.

If you have any questions or issues that you would like the paddling committee to address please contact your representative i.e. Rhys, Meredith or Cindy. Alternately you can contact the paddling director or the commodore directly. We are very excited about the direction of the club and the potential that we have amongst our paddlers. With our combined energy and effort the burgee is ours!

Yours in sport,

Sue Holloway
Paddling Director
