At the CanMas dinner held on Sunday after the races Masters were treated to a great dinner and some cold beverages.

After dinner Cynthia Perry made some presentations which included awards for Men's and Women's Canoe and Kayak. These honours are awarded each year to Masters athletes who have been nominated by their teammates. When it came time for the Men's Kayak Award, I listened to Cynthia as she read from what she described as an overwhelming number of nominations she received for this year's recipient.

Everything she said was very nice, but honestly I thought to myself "Why are they giving that guy an award, I kinda' do that stuff too."

Then she announced my name. I was floored. This award means more than any race results. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy competing and doing my best but that is not why I am a member at Rideau. It's the people who make the Club a special place. I want to thank all my friends and teammates who thought to nominate me for the award. It is my privilege to paddle along side such a great bunch of athletes.

Thanks,
Derek Mersereau
