Barney Wainwright named CanoeKayak Canada’s high performance director

OTTAWA- Barney Wainwright was named today CanoeKayak Canada’s new High Performance Director for the sprint events.

Wainwright, now based in Ottawa, brings 25 years experience in the sport and
13 years working with Olympic athletes and coaches to improve performances.

Since September 2009 he was the high performance advisor for performance technology with Own The Podium.  He provided mentoring support to Canada's targeted summer sports as part of their preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games.

"I am honored to be asked to take on this role and to help steer CanoeKayak Canada and our athletes towards future success,’’ said the British-born Wainwright, 37. ‘’I am very fortunate to join CKC while it is in such a healthy state with outstanding athletes, coaches and support staff, standing atop an excellent club structure.’’

Prior to coming to Canada, Wainwright was the senior sport scientist for the British Canoe Union’s Olympic programs (1999-2009).

He was on the Team Great Britain support staff for two consecutive Olympic Games (2004 in Athens and 2008 in Beijing) and was involved in the development of the high performance system at the coaching and scientific levels.  He also worked at seven world championships and eight European championships with the British squad.

His duties with CKC will include managing and coaching our senior coaches, as well as our technical and sport science staff in the design and implementation of performance driven programs to maintain Canada’s status among the world powers in the sport.

’’The London Olympics are fast approaching and my immediate focus will be to work with the coaches and support staff to ensure that our athletes have the best possible preparation and that they achieve their potential in London,’’
Wainwright added.

Canoe and kayak sprint has been one of Canada’s most successful Olympic sports with 21 medals earned including five at the last two Games.

‘’Canada has had significant Olympic performances over the last few Games and with Barney's leadership I have every confidence our success will continue in 2012 and beyond,” said Lorraine Lafrenière, CKC’s Director General.

He will start his duties with CKC in the upcoming weeks.
