RCC DB News Bulletin 1 - April 24th, 2017


We hope that everyone is as excited as we are for the new season. Our coaches are eager to get out on the water with your teams! This is our first newsletter for the season and I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a few important things for the upcoming season. Please take the time to read this over and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.


Start Date (IMPORTANT): The planned start date for practices is Monday May 1st however this is contingent on water levels. We will provide an update on the season start date this coming Friday (April 28th). We will also post the start date on the website.


Practice Times:

Practice times for this season have been adjusted this year to help reduce traffic at the docks and on the site in general. Practice length is 55-60 minutes and they are the following:


  • 6:00am - 7:00am

  • 7:00am - 8:00am

  • 5:00pm - 6:00pm

  • 5:30pm - 6:30pm (new time slot)

  • 6:00pm - 7:00pm* (read notes in red below)

  • 6:30pm - 7:30pm (new time slot)

  • 7:00pm - 8:00pm* (read notes in red below)

  • 7:30pm - 8:30pm (new timeslot)

  • 8:00pm - 9:00pm* (read notes in red below)


* Special Note: Given the early sunset during the first few weeks of the season we will be modifying the 6:00pm, 7:00pm, and 8:00pm sessions. These sessions will be running at 5:50pm, 6:50pm, and 7:50pm until the May long week-end. Practices will resume their normal times on the Monday May 22nd, 2017. Your on-line schedules reflect this change.


Team Practices: If you are interested in viewing your practice times without having to login to the team portal you may do so at the link below. Teams are listed in alphabetical order and you can type in the filter and select your team for faster access. This link is also mobile friendly for easy access from your phone. If you notice something incorrect please contact me immediately.


Practices by Team


Team Portal: Each year we try to add more and more features to the team portal. New this year you are now able to cancel/delete practices which are more than 7 days in advance. Should you want to cancel/delete a practice taking place within less than 7 days you must contact us at dragon@rideaucanoeclub.ca. We now also have the ability for teams to review which coaches are available for their sessions specifically and select their coach. Fee statements are also available from the portal. We encourage teams to use the portal to review schedules, coach assignments, and payment information. We will continue to add more features to provide a better experience for team captains. Waivers: If you are practising after June 25th OR if you are not a participant of the Tim Hortons Ottawa dragon boat festival you must fill out a waiver specific to the RCC. This is NOT the same waiver as the one that your team members fill out for the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. I have included a link to the waiver below. Please note that 3 signatures can be on each waiver. Waivers can be dropped off at the club before your practice. There is an office on the main floor. We have a staff member in the office weekdays between 9am and 5pm. If the staff member is not there please place the waivers under the door or give them to your coach.

RCC Festival: We are excited to report that we will be having our 10th annual RCC Dragonboat Festival Saturday August 26th, 2017. If you are looking to do a race after the Ottawa Festival in June please consider joining us for what will be another fantastic event with lots of racing.  Information about the festival can be found at:

For less than $30* per person you will have 4 guaranteed races as well as 1 FREE practice (payment must be received before July 1st to qualify for free practice)!

*based on 25 paddlers


Payments: If you have not already done so please ensure that payment is received for your sessions 1 week prior to your first practice. If you are training throughout the Summer you are permitted to pay in instalments. Cheques should be made out to Rideau Canoe Club.

Steering and Drumming:

Once again this season we will be offering steering services for $26 per practice and/or $35 per race (+ HST). If you would like to rent a steers person for the festival you can request one by contacting us at: dragon@rideaucanoeclub.ca. If you feel that you are going to need a steers person for the race please contact us in advance. Steers people are provided on a first come first serve basis. Fees for steering will be added to your team account for practices and for races. Please note that new this year a portion of the costs ($10) goes towards a reserve fund to cover damage costs to the equipment when a hired steers person breaks equipment (in 2016 we were charged $3253.14 CAD for damages at the Tim Hortons festival - broken heads, tails, etc.). This is the reasoning for the increase in fees ($25 -> $35). In order to be covered for damages payment must be made through the club and a coach cannot be directly paid. If a team pays a coach directly and there is damage to the boat the team and/or coach is responsible to pay all fees.


Drummers may also be hired. Typically teams will only hire a drummer for races. The cost for drummers is $30 per race (+ HST). Please contact dragon@rideaucanoeclub.ca in advance of the festival. Fees for drumming will be added to your team account for races on the Saturday. Should you advance to Sunday you will pay the coach directly at the time of the race.


Recruitment:

Just a friendly reminder that we maintain a web page on the Rideau Canoe Club website which allows teams and individuals connect. If you are looking for paddlers to fill your boat please reach out and try to find someone using our site. This year we are looking to try and increase the number of male participants in the sport. The Rideau Titans is a men's team based out of the club and they are actively looking for male paddlers. Please see their posters and others on the find a team/paddler page.
