The Rideau Canoe Club is located on some of the best training flat water in the country on Mooney's Bay in Ottawa. We have been consistently among the top canoe clubs in Canada at the National Championships. We are the 2015, 2018 and 2019 Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak Champions! Over the years, the club has managed to successfully maintain its performance at the highest level, while continuing to offer successful programs to paddlers of all ages in Summer Camps, Sprint, Paddling and Dragon Boat programs.

Coach Training
  • Community Coach Training - May 24, 2020 - Carleton Place
  • ELCC Training - May 29-31 or June 12-14 - Carleton Place

  • Lead U14 Sprint Coach

Lead Coaches are experienced coaches who are responsible for both coaching the group to which they are assigned, and managing the Assistant Coaches who are also assigned to their group. They write the program, do the entries for each local regatta, and coach at the local regattas. On top of coaching, they set the tone and atmosphere of their group, making the RCC Summer Sprint Program fun, inclusive, and safe. They work to implement the vision of the RCC through leading by example, and by believing that every single athlete who comes through their program can be a successful canoe/kayak athlete. 

Pay rate is based on certification and experience.

Requirements
    • must have at least 1 season of coaching experience  
    • strong organizational skills
    • strong leadership skills, must be comfortable leading a team 
    • willing to coach on weekends at regattas
    • availability to coach in the spring program an asset
    • enthusiasm and passion for paddling is a must 
    • safety conscious and responsible 
Qualifications (if offered the position, you will need to fulfill these requirements
    • Born in 2002 or before
    • ELCC certified (by July 15, preferably by the end of June) 
    • Standard First Aid with CPR-C
    • Police Record Check 
    • Pleasure Craft Operators License 
General Responsibilities (more specific responsibilities will be communicated during staff training) 
    • coach in 3 of the 4 blocks per day, with 1 admin block (Full time position) 
    • possibly fill in for other coaches during the fourth block of the day, including for Canoe Kids roles 
    • act as lead first aid and discipline coach if needed during admin time
    • write and adapt program throughout the summer 
    • communicate with fellow coaches 
    • make lesson/practice plans 
    • care for and set up equipment
    • do entries for local regattas using evidence based decision making in line with the Crew Selection Criteria
    • organize/input time control data
    • help Sprint Coordinator with projects and tasks
    • attend extra curricular activities such as U14 Sleepover and the Paddle A Thon 
    • mentor and manage Assistant Coaches when working with them in the block 
    • ensure the program that is written for their group is developmentally appropriate 
    • ensure the athletes are learning relevant paddling skills and are showing upwards progression 
    • manage discipline and inter-personal conflicts in their group 

  • Assistant U14 Coach 

Assistant Coaches are the backbone of the Summer Sprint coaching staff. They are the ones who ensure that all the kids are safe on the water while they fall in love with the sport of paddling. They ensure that all athletes are showing upwards progression in their skills and fitness, and that all athletes feel welcome and like part of the RCC family. They coach either part time of full time throughout the summer, passing on their knowledge and passion for paddling to the next generation of RCC members.

Requirements 
    • Ability to connect with athletes and to form positive relationships 
    • Ability to control a group of athletes both on and off the water 
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team 
    • Must be enthusiastic and passionate about the sport of canoe/kayak 
    • Safety conscious and responsible 
General Responsibilities (more specific responsibilities will be communicated during staff training) 
    • Coach in 2 or 3 blocks per day (part time is 2 blocks, full time is 3 blocks)
    • Possibly fill in for other coaches during their third or fourth block of the day, including for Canoe Kids roles 
    • Ensure athletes are safe both on and off the water 
    • Communicate with fellow coaches and with the Lead Coach 
    • Know the goal for each practice, make a plan and modify when necessary
    • Care for equipment and instruct athletes on proper use of equipment   
    • Ensure the athletes are learning relevant paddling skills and are showing upwards progression 
    • Help the Lead Coach manage discipline and inter-personal conflicts in their group
Qualifications (if offered the position, you will need to fulfill these requirements) 
    • Born in 2002 or before
    • ELCC trained (preferred), or Canoe Kids Community Coach (minimum) 
    • Standard First Aid with CPR-C
    • Police Record Check if over 18 
    • Pleasure Craft Operators License 

  • Canoe Kids Summer Camp Coordinator

The Canoe Kids staff and Summer Sprint staff are working together as a team to teach youth canoe/kayak programs that are fun, safe, and productive. Participants should come out of their camp/summer program saying “I am/want to be a paddler.” Coaches have programs and lesson plans with desired outcomes and strategies to attain the goal of the practice. There is a sense of optimism and each athlete feels valued and sees improvements in his/herself.

Pay rate is based on certification and experience. Start Date May 15 - End Date August 21

Responsibilities
  • Interview and manages staff (scheduling, time sheets, evaluations etc.)
  • Train staff (in cooperation with Sprint Coordinators) and mentor - on the ground and in boats - leading by example 
  • Ensure safety protocols are always followed (staff-athlete ratios, life jacket, motorboat use etc.)
  • Communicate professionally and efficiently with parents (welcome email, respond to emails, follow up surveys etc.)
  • Communicate with camp partners (Terry Fox and Carleton University Camps) 
  • Develop fun, innovative lesson plans (including crafts, certificates, t-shirts),
  • Work closely with Sprint Coordinators and Rec coordinator (share equipment/space) 
  • Troubleshoot and effectively manage issues with support from Sprint Coordinators, Office Administrator, ED and Canoe Kids' Directors
Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have experience instructing paddling
  • Must have great communication and leadership skills and be enthusiastic about teaching kids how to paddle
  • At the time of hiring must have a current Police Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector, Ontario Pleasure Craft Operator Card, CPR C and Standard First Aid, and a minimum of Community Coach (Canoe Kids) Certification.
  • Experience managing staff/supervising is an asset

  • Dock Duty Supervisor

The Rideau Canoe club is looking for an enthusiastic individual to work as full-time Dock Duty Supervisor.  The dock duty supervisor will have 3 major responsibilities: supervise the dock duty staff; assist with the installation and maintenance of the canoe club's racecourse; and supervise the dock. 

Pay rate is based on certification and experience. Start Date May 15 - End Date August 31

Supervising Staff
  • Scheduling and supervising Dock Duty workers

Dock Supervision

  • Dock Duty Staff

The Rideau Canoe club is looking for an enthusiastic people to work part-time as Dock Duty Staff.  Dock Duty Staff will be working part-time over the summer to make sure the canoe club is always tidy and safe. Dock Duty Staff will answer questions from visitors.

Start Date June 22 - End Date August 21
